Our family of 4 will arrive into Keelung on Diamond Princess cruiseship Saturday 15th April at 7:00am and the ship is due to leave at 5:00pm. Can anyone please give opinions/advice/directions/price for the train trip into and back from Taipei? Thank you.
Train from keelung to Taipei
It takes time to unload all the cruise passengers and clear customs; so even though the ship docks at 7, you may not get off the boat till 7:30 or 8:00 a.m.
If you can catch the 7:53 a.m. Tze-Chiang express, you will be in Taipei by 8:27 a.m. Miss that, and you will have to take the commuter train (for there will not be another express for 5 hours). Regardless of which train you take, you should make it to Taipei main station before 9:30 a.m. Fare is 66 NTD one way for the express, and 43 NTD for the commuter.
For the return trip, the last viable train is the 3:00 p.m. commuter, which gets you into Kee-Lung by 3:50 p.m, thus leaving you with slightly over an hour to board the cruise.
That leaves you with between 5.5 to 6 hours to explore the city. My advice is to either (1) spend the whole day at the National Palace Museum, or (2) visit the CKS Memorial, the Sun-Yat-Sen memorial, and Taipei 101, before boarding the train at Shung-Shan station back to Kee-lung.

Thanks for that info. It will be worthwhile to ensure that we are on the 7:53 a.m. Tze-Chiang express, Which train should we catch to aim to get back to Keelung about 3pm please?(Ihave heard of passengers missing the ship when the train broke down so prefer to leave extra time to help cope with emergencies. )
Is it easy to find the train we need to catch and the station we need to get off at?
How do you get around to the places that you suggest we visit please?
I really appreciate the help - can%26#39;t thank you enough. The aussie dollar has plummeted so I am trying to avoid tours wherever possible. Plus we like the flexibility of independent sightseeing.
Actually, there%26#39;s a lot to do around Keelung. You may want to check out the following sites:
http://www.klcg.gov.tw/en/05/05_1.jsp
www.necoast-nsa.gov.tw/user/Main.aspx?Lang=2
yeliou.northguan-nsa.gov.tw/managerment
unfortunately, i couldn%26#39;t find an eng web for the yehliou park, so u may have to make do with the above chinese version.
u could probably cover all the three sites in a day,if u rent a taxi to bring u around that is.
If u want to venture into Taipei city on a train, the website is :

Thank you for the extra advice. Is it best to get single or return train tickets to Taipei please?
one gets a 10 percent off for return tickets.

return leg, take chukuang 12.
tix only bookable 14 days prior to travel date.
Even if you miss the train, there are many Inter City buses that run very frequently into Taipei City. All the stops are next to the Station. Bus signs in front of bus is in Eng/ Chi LED display.
You could hire a cabbie like Meeky Yand and cover a lot of ground at your convenience PLUS, he will get you back to your Boat in time for your departure. tripadvisor.com/鈥?1479634
Commuter 2532 leaves Taipeiu station at 2 p.m. and arrives at Keelung at 2:48 p.m.
If you miss 2532, the next train to Keelung will be Commuter 2196. It leaves Taipei at 2:35 p.m., and arrives Keelung at 3:24 p.m.
No need to reserve in advance, as there are no ticket quotas for Commuter train.
