Taiwan Itinerary Help

I will arrive in Taiwan Feb 12 and I will be there til the 21st night. My flight arrives in Taipei and I will be leaving from there as well. My trip isn%26#39;t long, but I%26#39;d like to head south. What places should I definitely go to and what places are a waste of time? I don%26#39;t want to see only city.

Feb 13: I was planning on going from Taipei to Taichung, wander around there and stay at the Fuh Chun Hotel. What should I see around here?

From there I was planning on going South to Chiayi. Can anyone suggest cheap hotels there? I heard the scenery is supposed to be nice, and the hot springs.

Maybe Tainan for a night?

Then I wanted to head to Kaohsiung and stay around there til I have to go back to Taipei and catch my flight.

Feb 21: Taipei

Basically along that route, what places would you recommend to visit in the time I have? I%26#39;d love to do hiking and see places other than cities, even though that is all i have marked down. Alishan sounds nice, but it seems not practical for the time I have.

Also, if I reversed it and went straight to Kaohsiung, would it be better to make my way up from there to Taipei?

Any help would be appreciated.

I%26#39;m sure the experts will be more help on here than I will be. What about Kenting? It%26#39;s just south of the Kaohsiung and it has a beautiful beach. I%26#39;m assuming if your nixing Alishan, you wouldn%26#39;t be interested in Sun Moon Lake? If you%26#39;d like to do some hiking, both of those places (Alisha %26amp; Sun Moon Lake) provides some wonderful trails. If you%26#39;ve never been to either, I%26#39;d think that those two spots would be do not miss places over Chiayi or spending too much time in Kaohsiung. Just my 2 cents though! Good luck planning =o)

I agree with Wbird about Kenting---if it%26#39;s scenery that you want to see, consider Kenting National Park in the south; Taroko National Park on the East Coast; and in central Taiwan, Chingjing and Mt. Hehuan. (I would recommend Green Island---with its very rare seabed hot spring---and Yushan National Park if you had more time.)

If it%26#39;s history and culture you like, Tainan and Lukang might be interesting for you.

Taichung can be used as a base for seeing central Taiwan---Xitou bamboo forest, Chingjing, Sun Moon Lake, etc.

Kaohsiung is a big port city, as you probably already know.

There are hot springs all over Taiwan; which one to go to depends on itinerary, time (some are remotely located) and type of hot spring you prefer.

Just to clarify, it isn%26#39;t possible to do ALL the places I%26#39;ve listed. Your itinerary will depend on whether you travel north from Kenting on the eastern side of the island or the western side.
