Hi,
Our family of 5 (2 adults 3 kids)will be in Taiwan in 1st 2 weeks of Dec. Will be in Alishan for first few days. We go to Hualien after that by taking HSR to Taipei and transferring to a train.
We need to find out if the HSR station and the train station (for trains to Hualien) are located together and how much time should we give ourselves to get from one to the other. This will help us to plan which train to book for.
Thanks and appreciate anyone%26#39;s help.

Taipei Train Station
Taipei City is served by High Speed Rail (HSR), railway (TRA) and Taipei Metro (MRT) train services. The only location where all three types of trains converge is Taipei Main Station. All stations are below street level and are linked by long underground malls. Follow the directional signs posted and walk through the underground linkways from Taipei HSR Station to Taipei Main Station (TRA). The walk takes about 2~3 mins. The TRA Station serves all TRA train types -- Tze Chiang (Taroko), Tze Chiang, Chu Kuang, Fu Hsing, Pu Kuai (Ordinary express) and Local (Diesel Car Rail / Electric Multiple Unit). All railway trains are under the administration of Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA).

Taipei Train StationI mean Diesel Rail Car (DRC) and not Diesel Car Rail.
the ticketing entrances of rail n HSR are located on B1 of the station, almost next to each other, from exit of HSR to rail entrance is indeed about 3min%26#39;s walk, but the ticketing office for rail n HSR are located on the first floor, so unless one pre buy the rail tix, one would have to exit from HSR, walk to the tix office one level above, buy tix n go down again, so allow for at least 15-20 min to be on the safe side.
Thanks for the very helpful and informative replies. This will make our making of tickets easier.
Thanks. We look forward to our time there.

Hi,
I have tried booking and paying for the train ticket (from Taipei to Hualien for 6th dec2008). At the railway admin site
(http://www.railway.gov.tw/en/index/index.aspx)it was linked to (http://railway.hinet.net/net_eng.htm) for the internet booking. I keyed in passport number, date and train number and got a confirmation number.
Questions:
1. How long do they keep the reservation?Read somewhere that you have to collect the ticket within 3 days. But we will only be in taipei on 2nd dec.
2. Is there another website I can go to where I can pay and get a confirmed ticket?
Thanks.

Reserved ticket must be collected within 2 days of booking (3 days including day of booking). Present your passport and Booking Code and make payment with credit card (foreign credit cards accepted at the counter) or cash at train station ticket counters from 0730 to 2200 hrs. No service charge payable. Also can be collected at any post offices during office hours. Service charge: NT$10 for each travel trip. Reservation / booking of tickets are only for Tze Chiang (including Taroko), Chu Kuang and Fu Hsing trains.
You can purchase tickets far in advance before date of travel. I understand that only Taiwan issued credit cards (not overseas credit cards) are accepted for payment by the system i.e only credit cards issued in Taiwan can be used for online purchase of train tickets. The ticketing system rejects foreign-issued credit cards details.
However, if you are paying for train tickets at the train station ticket window, both foreign-issued and Taiwan-issued credit cards are accepted for payment. Of course, you can also choose to pay in cash.
You can pick up tickets already paid online just before boarding the train.
Thanks for the hepful and detailed information. Guess we will have to book the tickets just before we leave and pick it up when we arrive. Thanks once again.

Thanks for your help. Reservation and payment successfully made from Hualien to Taipei!
For the train from Rueifang to Hualien - I cannnot find Rueifang in the station list for booking. Is that because the fast trains do not stop there?
For the train from Rueifang to Hualien, click “089-Juifeng” for Rueifang and “051-Hualien” for Hualien. Express and local trains do stop at Rueifang Railway Station before heading to Hualien.
