Hey guys, ill be heading out to Taiwan later on this year. We ll be arriving in taipai and staying there for about 5 nights, then we ll be taking the bullettrain to Kyoshiung where we will be staying another 3 nights. But my question is, where can we rent a rental car with a baby seat, in or near kyosiung? We would like to drive along the east coast instead of taking the train back to taipai. and we plan on exploring quite a bit on the east coast. Heard its great and not too busy for driving.

You are not going to find a Hertz or Alamo in Taiwan, all you have are domestic car rental companies. The 2 largest car rental companies are: www.car-plus.com.tw and www.easyrent.com.tw.
Both companies have counters at the Kaohsiung HSR station. Of the 2 I recommend car-plus because it has a more user-friendly english website. You can also pick up at Kaohsiung airport or the Kaohsiung TRA station, whichever is more convenient for you.
As for driving along the east coast. It is true that the view is stunning, and the drive between Kaohsiung to Hualien is relatively easy, with straight roads and light traffic. But once you get past Hualien, the roads start to get really narrow and winding, with very heavy truck traffic. Do exercise caution on this part of the route

sounded like what you really need is a one-way rental pickup in Kaohsiung and drop-off in Taipei? This would be very difficult to find and at a very high price. You would be better off taking the train from Kaohsiung to Taidung, and from there, you can hire a taxi up to Hualian and then via Chingshui Cliff to Suao or Taipei.
We paid $3000 NT for a taxi from Hualian to Suao (including all the stops on the beautiful Suhua Road) in March, 2008. We had this same driver for a one-day tour of the Taroko ($2,000 quoted, but ended up $1,800, but then we tipped him $200 anyways...).
Lots of taxi drivers from Hualian can do Taidung to Hualian as well. I would recommend our driver as he was the nicest guy ever and very knowledgable, but he doesn%26#39;t speak English.
With the taxi option, you can better enjoy the east coast and not have to worry about the driving. Driving in Taiwan can be very exhuasting. Even thuogh the traffic is not bad in that part of the island, the mountain roads could get tricky, and you will need to find some one-way rental.
Actually one way rentals are quite common in Taiwan, and some rental agencies such as easyrent.com.tw won%26#39;t even charge extra for it.
That said, unlike in the US where you can easily get an economy or compact for less than 25 USD per day, in Taiwan even an economy will cost you close to 80 USD.
the car rental prices in TW are absolutely ridiculous, particularly when you consider how small the country is, and that you are not able to drive soooooo many Kilometers.....
The rental prices are high because cars are expensive in Taiwan. The government imposes an automobile import tax in excess of 100 percent, as a result cars in Taiwan cost twice, and even three times as much as they do in America, Europe, or Japan. If you consider the fact that these countries have a much higher per capita income than Taiwan, it makes the rental price even more ridiculous.
