Thanks a lot!!! very detailed and helpful. anyway, do you know what is there to do at jiufen and fisherman%26#39;s wharf? it is worth the travelling time to go to jiufen?
Jiufen and Jinguashih are favourite places to visit for travelers to Taipei. Jiufen is a quaint village on a hilltop with good views of the mountains, the Yin Yang Sea and Pacific Ocean. Jiufen was once a flourishing mining town. After World War II, the mining industry ended. The internationally acclaimed Taiwanese movie “City of Sadness” was shot here and focused on Jiufen’s colorful past. Jiufen prospered again and the crowds came to stroll on the stepped alleys till this day. Take a walk through Chishan Street (Jiufen Old Street) and the alleyways. Feel the chill of the cool mountain air. Watch the sun set through the clouds. Visit Jiufen Goldmine, old Shengping Theatre and traditional teahouses with open-air roof terraces for dining, tea drinking. Look up at the moon and stars in the quiet of the night.
Local cuisine include Yu Yuan (Taro balls), sweet potato balls, Hong Zhao Ba Wan (pork marinated in red wine), beef noodles, fish stew etc. Hsienkuang cakes, Tai Yang Ping (sun biscuits), Mua-chi, herbal cakes are favourite foodstuffs amongst travelers to Jiufen.
Fishermen Wharf in Danshui is popular with locals and visitors to take a stroll during the late afternoons and early evenings. Watch the sun set over the 165m long Lovers Bridge being lighted up as the sky turns dark. Shops, cafes and seafood restaurants are located along the wharf. Outdoor activities include celebrities’ concerts and caricature. Many travelers also go to Danshui Old Street (Zhongzheng Rd Sec 1) for the eateries, cafes by the wharf.
Ah Po iron eggs, Ah-Gei, fishball soup, fish crisps etc are favourite foodstuffs amongst travelers to Danshui.
Take a ferry across Danshui River to the opposite river bank -- Bali Township. Go for a tricycle ride along the river bank. Try peacock clams, fresh fat fish at a popular restaurant there. Try also the local snacks from “Twin sisters” stall.
Jiufen, Jinguashih and Fishermen Wharf are definitely worth a visit as evidence by the inclusion of these attractions in many of the travelers’ itineraries.
Correction!
To go to Jiufen:
Take the MRT trains from Ximen station and alight at Zhongxiao Fuxing station (4 stations away). No need to transfer trains at Taipei Main station. Ximen and Zhongxiao Fuxing stations are on the same blue line of the MRT system.
Use exit 1 at Zhongxiao Fuxing station and transfer to Keelung buses for Jiufen.
Thanks for the help. i will know what to look out for when im there.
it seems that travelling to jiufen bt railway is about 45 min faster. do i have to book the train tickets in advance or can i buy the tickets at the station itself?
There are many train services from Taipei Railway Station to Rueifang Station in any day. There is no necessity to book in advance. You can purchase tickets on the day of travel just before you board the train. No worries.
Hi
Just sign up tripadvisor.com. This site is really a great site travelling enquiries.
I will be going to Taiwan from 29th Jan till 2nd Feb.One of the itinerary will be Jiu Fen Old Street.
Just to confirm after alighting from the TRA train at Rueifang Railway Station, if I%26#39;m going to Jiufen Old street, I would need to cross Mingdeng Rd Sec 3 to the bus stop just outside the shops and café to take Keelung bus service right?
Please see this link for reference.
yoyonet.biz/egoing/bus/beichi/kilon/09.htm
May I know if this is the correct bus service?
If yes, which stop should I alight? Because as mentioned from your post, you said to alight at the Old street (Chishan Street) stop along the road bend But I can%26#39;t find the street name on the link provide above.
Please advise.
As I will be going there soon, your prompt reply is much appreciated.
Thank you.
Yes, you are right. After alighting from the train at Rueifang Railway Station, cross Mingdeng Rd Sec 3 (the road in front of Rueifang Railway Station) to the bus stop just outside the shops and café. Board the Keelung buses originating from Keelung city (yoyonet.biz/egoing/bus/beichi/kilon/09.htm).
You can also board Keelung buses originating from Taipei city. These buses display final destination “Jinguashih” which will go to Jiufen before terminating at Jinguashih. The bus journey uphill to Jiufen (approx. 5.3km) takes about 20 mins. Alight at Old Street bus stop. Old Street refers to Jishan Street (Chishan Street), a smaller road off the main road. Many of the bus passengers alight here, so there is no worry of missing the bus stop. You can see a 7-11 convenience store along a road bend.
